medical Treatment & Care

w/ Dr. Matt Van Auken, MD, MPH

  • The Buddha's Medicine is distinguished by being lead by Dr. Matt Van Auken, a fully qualified medical doctor who combines Western and Ayurvedic medicine, compared to lay Ayurvedic practitioners with only certificate training. Dr. Matt holds an MD with triple board certification, an MPH, and 15 years of Ayurvedic study, enabling him to offer comprehensive medical services including testing, diagnosis, and medication management that lay Ayurvedic practitioners legally cannot provide. - Learn More

  • Our approach integrates multiple healing modalities—modern bioscientific medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, lifestyle medicine, and preventative approaches—under one roof with a consistently available healthcare provider. This integration creates both clinical and financial efficiency for our patients. As a triple board-certified physician with extensive training in both conventional and Ayurvedic medicine, Dr. Matt brings a unique perspective that allows for comprehensive care in one place, rather than requiring separate appointments with multiple specialists.

  • No, Ayurveda a non-religious medical system despite common misconceptions. It originated from Vedic philosophy but is non-denominational. - Learn More

  • Root-cause medicine focuses on identifying and addressing the fundamental causes of health issues rather than merely managing symptoms. While this approach may require more investment upfront, it often proves more economical over time. When only symptoms are treated, they tend to recur or evolve into different manifestations of the same underlying imbalance, leading to ongoing medication costs, repeated doctor visits, and potentially more invasive treatments later. By addressing root causes, we work toward sustainable healing that can reduce your long-term healthcare expenses and dependency on the medical system.

  • Rather than paying for separate appointments with multiple specialists (a primary care physician, nutritionist, wellness coach, alternative medicine practitioner, etc.), you receive comprehensive, integrated care in one place. This approach not only provides better continuity of care but can also be more cost-effective in the long run. Many of our patients find that their overall healthcare costs decrease significantly after addressing the root causes of their concerns.

  • We encourage you to contact us directly to discuss how we can help with your specific health concerns or conditions.

For prospective/new patients, your condition can be discussed during a scheduled FREE consultation with Dr. Matt.

  • The Buddha’s Medicine is not presently offering primary care services, though there are plans to add a direct primary care offering in the future. Stay tuned!

  • Yes, we actually specialize in working with complex cases. We lovingly refer to our complex cases as "medical misfits" - those are individuals whose needs haven't been met through conventional medical systems.

    • Multiple sensitivities

    • Previous unsuccessful treatment experiences

  • Yes, we contract through Evexia for wholesale labs: Evexia works primarily with LabCorp.

Labs ordered through The Buddha's Medicine are a separate out-of-pocket expense.

  • We understand this common frustration, and also that lab results only tell a small part of a person's health story. Our practice goes beyond reviewing standard lab results by:

    • Investigating underlying patterns

    • Taking a careful and complete history, knowing that this tells us much more about you than your lab results

    • Considering how various systems in your body interact

    • Looking carefully at lifestyle and environmental factors

    • Addressing root causes rather than just symptoms

    • Believing your story and taking your lived experience seriously

  • Yes! We provide virtual Telemedicine/Telehealth appointments, as well as in-person/in-office appointments.

We offer telehealth both locally in Oregon and Washington, and to most states nation-wide.

  • If you are in or traveling to the Portland, OR area, then yes!

Dr. Matt works old fashioned-style out of his home office, taking both in-person and telehealth visits.

Home visit options for the Portland, OR metro area are also now available!

  • There is ample, no-cost street parking on our block and on adjacent blocks. Pick the nearest available spot!

  • Your individualized care plan will include lifestyle prescriptions, suggestions for pertinent laboratory tests, herbal medicine and supplement recommendations, and more. Dr. Matt may recommend reviewing or modifying medications that you might be taking in concert with your prescribers. A follow-up plan will also be included.

Please note: at this time, we are unable to assume prescribing duties for medications, and are not yet ordering lab tests directly. We are also not providing primary care services - yet.

  • Unlike conventional practices that rush through 15-20 minute visits, we provide extended appointment times of 1hr to 3hrs to ensure your concerns are thoroughly addressed and you receive the attention you deserve.

  • This depends on several factors, including the complexity of your condition and how long you have had it. It will also depend on how much time, energy, and attention you’re willing to devote to your plan of care. On our end, we can promise a dynamic and evolving plan of care based on what suggestions you find simplest to implement, and how you respond.

In general, care plans are oriented toward achieving clinical improvement over 2-3 months, but most people start seeing notable improvement within the first few weeks.

  • Genuine integrative care is not and should not be just for the wealthy. Most of our patients are working and middle class people who want to improve their health and feel their best.

Currently, our base rate is $200/hour.

However, if this feels out of reach, we encourage you to be in touch! We are virtually always able to work out a payment rate that works for you and for us. We do everything we can to make our care affordable to the average person. Appointments

  • At The Buddha's Medicine, affirmation isn't just a statement on our website—it's woven into everything we do. Our practice is built on the fundamental understanding that each person is inherently unique, and we welcome the distinctive combination of qualities and characteristics that makes you who you are. We've created an environment where your gender identity and sexual orientation are recognized as integral parts of your health journey, not simple footnotes. From our intake process to our treatment plans, we prioritize creating a space where you can share your complete story and receive care that respects and celebrates your authentic self.

  • Ayurveda's fundamental principle is that each person has a unique constitution (prakriti) and current state of balance. This ancient wisdom recognizes that humans exist on multiple spectra of experiences and expressions—a perspective that naturally aligns with affirming care for LGBTQ+ individuals. Ayurveda's holistic body-mind-spirit model provides a personalized framework that can support individuals through various aspects of coming out, living fully, transitioning, affirming, and more. Whether through herbal medicines, therapeutic lifestyle recommendations, healing breathwork, or mind-body techniques, Ayurvedic principles complement and enhance modern approaches to LGBTQ+ affirming care.

  • We recognize that many LGBTQ+ individuals have experienced significant trauma in healthcare settings, leading to delayed care or care avoidance. At The Buddha's Medicine, you'll find a healthcare home where your identity is celebrated, your health concerns are taken seriously, and you're supported in achieving wellness goals in alignment with your authentic self. You won't encounter personal judgment or have anyone questioning who you fundamentally are. Our intake process is designed to be receptive and complete, giving you space to tell your story in a way that feels safe and affirming. Our commitment is to provide care that combines ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern integrative medical knowledge, all delivered through a lens of genuine respect for who you are.

  • We approach transgender and gender-affirming healthcare with respect, knowledge, and a commitment to your overall well-being. Ayurvedic principles support gender-affirming care beautifully, offering complementary approaches that can be integrated with modern medical treatments. Whether you're considering or currently undergoing hormone therapy, seeking preventive care, addressing mental health concerns, or managing specific health issues, our approach is always grounded in respect for your identity and goals. We can work with you to develop personalized plans that support your transition journey and overall health, incorporating Ayurvedic practices that address both physical and emotional aspects of well-being.

  • No previous knowledge of Ayurveda is required. We meet you wherever you are on your health journey and take the time to explain our approach in accessible, respectful ways. Our practice integrates Ayurvedic wisdom with modern integrative medicine, creating care plans that make sense in the context of your life and experiences. We'll guide you through the principles and practices that are relevant to your specific health goals, ensuring you understand the "why" behind our recommendations.

  • We maintain strict confidentiality and privacy for all patients in accordance with medical ethics and legal requirements. We understand that privacy concerns may be heightened for some LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those who are not out in all aspects of their lives. Our practice management systems and communication protocols are designed to respect your privacy preferences. During your initial consultation, we can discuss any specific privacy concerns you may have and develop a plan that makes you feel comfortable and secure.

  • You can schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation to discuss whether our approach is right for you. During this conversation, we can address any specific questions or concerns you might have about our LGBTQ+ affirming care and explore how Ayurvedic and integrative medicine might support your health goals. This is also an opportunity to discuss practical matters like scheduling, costs, and insurance. We welcome these initial conversations as a way to ensure that our practice is a good fit for your needs. - Get Scheduled

Jamie Van Auken, Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Associate

  • At this time, only Oregon.

  • Unfortunately no, due to the strictness of licensure, Jamie cannot be your therapist without a state license for your state. At this time, Jamie can only provide therapy services to only residents of Oregon.

  • I practice from a nervous system-forward, somatic approach that prioritizes regulation and safety in the body before diving into deeper therapeutic work. My style integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS), attachment theory, polyvagal theory, mindfulness, and somatic interventions. I believe (based on psychological science) that we feel before we think and that nearly all of our habits (even the ‘bad’ ones!) are relics of our younger selves doing the best we could with what we had. I know that we are all good inside and that lasting healing happens when we honor both the wisdom of the body and the intelligence of mind. My goal is to create a space that feels like settling in with warm tea - regulated, curious, and genuinely nourishing. - Learn More

  • My formative experience as a US Olympian, along with 20+ years of yoga practice and studio ownership brings with it a deep, integrated understanding of the mind-body connection that informs all of my therapeutic work. I acknowledge both the discipline required for change and the importance of moving at a pace that feels sustainable to your nervous system. I attune deeply to the felt sense in our work (both mine and yours) and situate this embodied knowing as part of our therapeutic work and wisdom. As a mother of two neurodiverse children, I also bring lived experience to supporting families navigating neurodiversity. - Learn More

  • Absolutely! And whether you're working with Dr. Matt or me individually, or both simultaneously, you'll experience the same commitment to individualized, compassionate care that defines our approach at The Buddha's Medicine. Our unique position as both a medical practice and therapeutic space allows us to offer something rare in healthcare: truly integrated support that recognizes the inseparable connection between mind and body.

Mental Health Therapy & Care

w/ Jamie Van Auken, Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Associate

  • My hope is to eventually work myself out of a job. That being said, life happens. Expect to address our initial treatment goals within the first six months of treatment. As things evolve, some clients change treatment goals and others move towards termination. Most weekly clients work with me for six to twelve months. That being said, if there is significant trauma or if we are working through significant relational patterns treatment timelines can change. I also have clients that move towards a monthly cadence for maintenance and accountability.

  • This is a great question! To be honest, therapeutic progress looks different for everyone. Sometimes, it can feel like a light switch and sometimes it can feel like a grueling hike. I am with you for whatever path you are traveling. If you are feeling ‘stalled’ I want you to tell me; these conversations can be integral, as they help to deepen into your knowing and attune our work together. Separately, I will be capturing change metrics alongside our sessions based on your initial treatment goals. I know that sometimes when you are in the mud - it can be hard to see how far you’ve come.

  • First sessions are like first dates -- a bit awkward, squirmy, and definitely hopeful. Initial visits can open a lot as you walk through your story of your life right now. I take this seriously and with the utmost compassion and respect. My goal for you in our first session (and every session!) is that you have a place to land. My care room is outfitted with tactile and sensory supports to help you settle in and together we will work to find a rhythm and connection style that leaves you feeling regulated and heard.

  • Ironically, sometimes feeling more uncomfortable is a sign of progress. When we arrive in therapy we are often guarded and protected by all our habits and stories that got us until now. Therapy often asks us to surrender these (or at least get curious about them) which can feel emotional and even destabilizing. This is the first layer of the work! I want you to bring your messiness into our sessions. It is in the mess that we can ultimately find clarity and a new path moving forward. Remember, my goal is not to change your life but to change how you see and experience your life. As Pema Chodron says - joy comes from the feeling that this situation is workable; something can grow here.

  • Great. I welcome you here! I work with a lot of 'first timers' in my men's groups and I personally love the curiosity (and sometimes resistance) that comes with starting this work. It's a brave new language for many of us. Whenever you are ready (and even before then) - I've got you.

  • I've been there too! There are a lot of great therapists out there and not every therapist is great for everybody. If you've had a negative experience in the past - I want you to tell me about it. Often times, our 'nos' are how we get to yes. And, for what it's worth, if you are not feeling connected with me - I want you to tell me about that too. Your healing is most important to me.

  • I get it! It sounds like you are paying attention. It can be scary to approach our histories and dream of doing things differently. I understand this and hold these energies with deep respect and tenderness. I welcome all of this into our work. I'm glad to be with you at every step of the journey.

  • We prioritize our patient portal as our primary method of direct communication with patients. If you'd like to get in touch, please reach out through a secure, direct portal message.

  • I can! Everything I offer is an invitation. You'll receive visit summary after we meet that offers you themes to notice, interpretations to hold, and practices to ground into. Some weeks you might feel really called to these and other weeks - life happens. No matter what kind of week you are having - I'll be holding the threads to pick back up when I see you next.

  • No, I'm a licensed therapist, not a medical doctor, so I cannot prescribe medication. However, being part of the team at The Buddha's Medicine means that I collaborate in care directly with Dr. Matt Van Auken, MD who is a medical provider with prescribing privileges. If medication evaluation (or herbal medicine or supplementation) might be helpful as part of your overall treatment plan, we can include him in your care, as well.

  • It depends. Every time someone sees a therapist through a traditional Western model, they receive a diagnosis for the purposes of billing insurance. If you are requesting a Superbill, then this conversation will be part of our intake. Generally, I view diagnosing as one aspect of the picture; diagnosing can help systems talk to each other and can invite a rear-view sense of clarity and peace, which can be very important and helpful for clients. That being said, a diagnosis usually represents a moment in time, and DSM diagnosing is based on and about statistics, not the uniqueness of individuals. Further, traditional diagnosing tends to be defecit-based, one-sided, and based on Caucasian male-centered data; in my opinion, this leads to biases, errors, and sometimes even systems-based oppression.

Lastly, if you are seeing me as a relational-system (a pair or triad or other family unit) and using insurance to Superbill, one person will have to be the "identified patient;" in traditional western systems, this means that treatment goals and progress are mapped through that identified patient, which is an important piece to be aware of.

When we work together, all of these conversations will be explicit and collaborative. I hold your knowing, your identities, and your cultural contexts with the utmost respect and care. You will never receive any labels, diagnosis, or treatments from me without your full consent and understanding.

  • Yes! I offer both virtual/telehealth sessions and in-person sessions. - Get Started

  • While I have worked with children in the past, at present I am only seeing clients age fifteen and up. If I am working with you for parenting support, I might meet your kiddo or have a virtual observation session of the family unit. We would discuss this as needed and this would be on a case-by-case basis not for on-going treatment.

  • I work with individuals, couples, and family systems (both biological and chosen). My relational work focuses on nervous system regulation and attachment-based healing, with particular expertise in "mixed neurotype" relationships where partners regulate differently. I also support individuals working on relationship patterns, attachment healing, and preparing for healthier relationships. I am trained to think relationally and systemically; this means that whether you are working with me as an individual or a relationship system, we will always be attending to the impact and wisdom of the inter-relational aspect of your experience and your being. - Get Started

  • Definitely - yes. I was trained relationally and systemically which means that your family is often in treatment (even when they are not in the room). Please know though that if we are inviting a family member into the session it will be with your consent and agreement. Opening sessions up is always intentional and purposeful; we will discuss parameters and boundaries before anyone joins in.

  • Absolutely! Having competed at the Olympic level for two decades, I intimately understand athletic identity, performance pressure, perfectionism, and the often challenging transition out of competitive sports. I bring both professional expertise and lived experience to supporting current and former athletes.

  • Yes! I regularly work with people that have other professionals in their corner. My favorite way to work is in collaboration - so please just name this in our sessions so that all appropriate paperwork can happen for us to communicate together.

  • I run groups from time to time. Please check the site for current and future offerings. If you have a group request feel free to message us with it!

  • I have experience communicating with multiple systems and providers. I am always happy to consult where and when appropriate. That being said, I believe that you are your best advocate. I am committed to not only being a voice in the room for you but, also, walking you through the steps of working with multiple systems so that you can continuously be the the advocate you need!

  • Somatic work might include breathwork, gentle movement, attuning to sensations in your body, or even walking sessions where movement supports processing. It's not about forcing anything - it's about creating space for your body's natural wisdom to emerge. Sometimes we'll simply slow down enough to notice what's happening in your nervous system moment to moment; other times, I will guide you towards deepening your connection with your somatic system through sound, creative process, tapping, and movement. All our somatic work starts with witnessing and consent. You'll create your path back towards a deeper connection with yourself.

  • IFS is all about the different "parts" we have within us - some that protect, some that carry pain, and a core Self that holds wisdom and compassion. Rather than trying to eliminate difficult emotions or behaviors, we explore these parts with curiosity and appreciation, helping them feel seen and valued so they are able to relax their protective roles, and in turn so that we open doorways to healing.

  • I have extensive experience working in eating disorder treatment centers across NY, WA, and OR, where I used Health at Every Size approaches and yoga/mindfulness-based interventions. My athletic background and personal recovery journey gives me unique insight into the complex relationship between body, performance, and identity that often underlies eating disorders.

  • I practice from a neurodiversity-affirming framework that celebrates neurological differences as natural variations in human expression. Rather than trying to make you fit neurotypical expectations, I help you understand how your unique nervous system operates and develop tools that support your thriving. Our work will invite in accommodations, sensory support and somatic strategies, so that you feel tended to and regulated as you are. As a highly-sensitive person myself, the spouse of a neurodiverse person, and a parent of neurodiverse children, I understand these challenges both professionally and personally.

  • I provide knowledgeable, affirming therapeutic support for gender identity exploration, transition decision-making, and processing the complex emotions that accompany gender journeys. While I don't provide medical transition care or formal letters, I offer skilled therapeutic support throughout your gender exploration process, and I can coordinate with other members of your care team.

  • I work with parents navigating the identity shift of becoming a parent, supporting neurodivergent or non-typical (hint - all!) children, and breaking generational cycles. As a mother myself, I understand the profound changes parenthood brings and the importance of parents having their own space to process and regulate. Support sessions often include regulation skills and strategies for caregivers, as well as identity caretaking and psycho-education around the path of raising tiny humans in a biased (and often broken) system.

  • Our therapy services are seamlessly integrated with our medical practice, which makes truly comprehensive care possible. We understand that anxiety, depression, relational struggles, and body image concerns often have physiological components that benefit from our integrative medical approach. Our collaboration means we can explore how factors like nervous system dysregulation, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, or chronic health conditions might be impacting your mental and emotional well-being from a multi-disciplinary standpoint. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, we address root causes and support your system's natural capacity for balance and vitality.

  • I want to be transparent about this: I don't work with clients who are actively suicidal or in crisis. The Buddha's Medicine is not equipped as a crisis clinic, and my practice focuses on growth-oriented therapy rather than crisis intervention. If crisis needs arise, I help connect clients with appropriate higher levels of care while maintaining the support they need during transitions.

  • Therapy services are not appropriate for mental health emergencies. In case of crisis:

    Immediate Emergencies:

    • Call 911 for life-threatening situations

    • Go to your nearest emergency room

    Mental Health Crisis Support:

    • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 988

    • Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741

    • Local crisis resources in your area

Active Psychosis: If you are experiencing hallucinations, delusions, severe disorientation, or loss of contact with reality, seek immediate medical attention at an emergency room. These conditions require specialized medical evaluation that cannot be provided through outpatient therapy.

Do not use email or text messaging for emergencies, as these are not monitored continuously.

  • I am unable to support active psychosis and active suicidality. I also do not prescribe any medication. If you are seeking pharmaceutical support you can address that with Dr. Matt or with your PCP/prescribing provider.

  • I am sorry that anyone has to ask this question, and I understand why. Firstly, therapy should be a safe space for you. Even if you do not end up engaging with me, please know this. While at times uncomfortable, therapy should be a place where you can compassionately examine yourself; we can only do this when our nervous system feels held and grounded. If you are not feeling this in any therapeutic relationship (and you do not feel like you can address this with your therapist), then the relationship is not the right fit for your growth.

Practically, when I say I am affirming, I mean that I live in with open-heartedness for the full diverse spectrum of persons. There is no one right way to human. In addition to my personal relationships, I regularly consult with and am supervised by people that share different identities and social locations then my own. I have worked in trans-affirming care and have supported many clients that share different identities. I remain committed to centering and listening to voices from those that have direct, lived experience. I am not one to 'tell you how it is;' rather, I am one to deeply listen and reflect back as you find your way back home.

  • The loves of my life are neurodiverse. For me, being neuro-affirming is not a token or a search term - it's my entire life. (I actually wrote a paper about this in grad school.) Raising an autistic son, who I love with my whole being, has been one of the biggest awakenings of my life. I feel the dissonance of knowing on an intrinsic level that there was nothing 'broken' about my son, while regularly pinged by systems-at-large that things were 'problems.' Honestly, it was an emperor has no clothes moment for me. I have had to question everything from: 'why we school' certain ways to 'is this my discomfort or a problem?' This is on-going work for me that I center everyday.

I want you to know that I feel on an visceral level that differences are not deficits and I believe you when you say that you have been harmed and misperceived - you do not have to explain that to me. Together, we will center how you come, celebrate your resilience living in a paradigm that is often inherently activating, and find strategies to accommodate you in your life so you feel better.

  • I want you to feel heard and understood in therapy. This means that the onus is on me to understand. Too often, people walking different (read: culturally 'non-normative') paths fall victim to tokenism or incomplete understanding; further, I've personally and professionally witnessed how people from minority groups often have to do the labor of 'educating' others. It is not your job to get me to understand you -- it's mine. If I have questions about your cultural, religion, history - I will do my earnest best to gain knowledge from appropriate sources, so that our time together is fully and wholly about you.

  • I am licensed to practice in Oregon and Washington. You can be anywhere in either of those two states. Unfortunately, if you move beyond those places we will have to terminate our work. In the event of this, I will work with you to find an appropriate referral who can walk with you for the next leg of your journey.

  • Yes! I welcome involvement from those that support you in your life. If I am seeing you as an individual client - we can always invite in additional people when it is relevant to your healing. If it becomes evident that relational work is more relevant to your growth we will talk about it. I am trained to do both relational work and individual work. Please know though that I cannot ethically do on-going individual and relational treatment for an individual client. If it becomes clear that both supports are necessary and on-going, I will support you in finding a second provider that can walk with you as you heal.

  • Provided that my schedule accommodates, I am always happy to do a 'bump-up' session as needed! It is not uncommon for people to need an extra session (or three) when making changes or when life hits. If on-going crisis support is needed, we will have a conversation about next steps. The Buddha’s Medicine is not a crisis clinic and we are not in a position to handle active psychosis or emergency care.

  • Life happens for all of us! If you know in advance of a schedule update - just let me know. We can always modify our schedule as needed. You also get one ‘no-questions-asked’ grace cancel per year because stuff comes up.

Policies

  • In the event you find that you are unable to be present for your appointment, please contact us at least 72 hours in advance to reschedule or cancel so that we may make that appointment available to other patients in need of care. Rescheduling and canceling appointments can only be done independently without support up to 72 hours before your appointment start time. It is your responsibility to provide 72 hour notice through Practice Better to cancel, reschedule, or change sessions. Under urgent circumstances, exceptions will be made to this policy on a case-by-case basis. You will only need to contact us to reschedule or cancel an appointment after the 72 hour mark prior to your scheduled appointment via both phone and email.

    If you need to cancel or reschedule your scheduled appointment to a more suitable day/time that for you, simply click the 'Need to reschedule?' button in your session confirmation email to make this change at your convenience;
    OR
access your Practice Better patient portal, navigate to My Resources -> Bookings, and click the 'Reschedule' button to the right of the session listed.

A non-refundable fee of $137.50 will be charged for:

    • Appointments cancelled or rescheduled with less than 72 hours notice

    • No-show appointments

    • Late arrivals that result in appointment cancellation

This fee is separate from and cannot be applied toward future appointments or services.

Emergency situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and must be communicated to The Buddha's Medicine via both email and phone.

If you're late by 15 or more minutes into your scheduled appointment and have not contacted us to determine if we can accommodate you, you will be listed as a no-show and will need to reschedule/cancel your appointment. In the event that you are late to an appointment and are still seen, you will be responsible for the full length of the appointment beginning at your scheduled appointment start time.

All of these fees cannot/will not be billed to insurance, and are entirely the Patient's responsibility.

If a Patient reschedules/cancels themselves or at our request 3+ consecutive appointments and/or no-shows 3+ consecutive times within a 9month period the patient will not be scheduled again, until they speak directly with the practice Manager. The Manager will work with the patient’s provider to decide if the patient may return to our practice. The Manager will notify the patient of the final decision. If the patient is discharged from the practice, an email with or without a referral to another provider will be sent to the patient's email on file.

Payments & Insurance

  • The Buddha's Medicine is a direct-care practice. This means that we do not accept payments from any insurance plan of any kind.

Payment plans and superbills are available, and HSA/FSA funds are accepted.

Our goal is to interact and interface with all of our patients directly, without any insurance or other middleman gatekeeping.

We can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement, upon request.

For Medicare recipients, our services do not qualify as covered benefits. If you are a Medicare recipient and wish to work with Dr. Matt, we will provide you with an advance beneficiary notice (ABN) form to document that our services are not covered.

  • For Medicare recipients, our services do not qualify as covered benefits. If you are a Medicare recipient and wish to work with Dr. Matt, we will provide you with an advance beneficiary notice (ABN) form to document that our services are not covered.

  • The insurance model restricts the quality and depth of care we can provide. Insurance companies typically incentivize brief appointments focused on single complaints, which contradicts our holistic approach. They require using narrowly-applicable western diagnosis codes and payment-limiting procedure codes. By operating outside this system, we can offer longer, more comprehensive appointments that explore the full complexity of your health and provide personalized treatment plans addressing root causes rather than symptoms alone.

  • Yes, potentially. While we don't bill insurance directly, we provide detailed superbills that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many of our patients have successfully received partial reimbursement through this process. During your free consultation, we can discuss this option in more detail. - Get Scheduled

  • We can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement, upon request for patients with private insurance plans.

  • We offer several options to make our care more accessible:

    • Payment Plans: For established patients facing financial constraints, we offer flexible payment plans that can spread costs over time.

    • Free Consultations: We provide complimentary 15-minute consultations to discuss whether our approach is right for you, including conversations about financial arrangements.

    • HSA/FSA Acceptance: Many of our services qualify for payment through Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts.

    • Superbills for Insurance Reimbursement: We provide detailed superbills that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

  • We are virtually always able to work out a payment rate that works for you and for us. We do everything we can to make our care affordable to the average person.

    Payment plans are also available.

Please review our the Appointments page for more detailed information.

We also encourage you to get in touch with us!

  • Yes, HSA/FSA funds are accepted.

  • Yes, payment plans are offered to established patients.

For prospective/new patients, payment plan options can be discussed during a scheduled FREE consultation with Dr. Matt.

Payment plans are a courtesy extended to patients in need, and approval is subject to the discretion of The Buddha’s Medicine. We also encourage our patients to explore alternative payment options from all reasonable available sources, such as using available HSA funds, credit, loans, or financial assistance programs, whenever applicable.

  • We believe that financial barriers should not prevent people from accessing transformative care. If financial constraints are preventing you from seeking care with us, we encourage you to reach out. As we emphasize to every prospective patient: We will always do the best we can to make services sustainably available to you. While we can't guarantee we can accommodate every financial situation, we promise to try our best to find a solution that works for you. - Contact Us or -Get Scheduled

clinical hypnosis

  • Clinical hypnosis (hypnotherapy) is a therapeutic approach that uses naturally-occurring brain states to increase responsiveness to positive suggestion. Unlike stage hypnosis, which is performed for entertainment, clinical hypnosis is an evidence-based medical intervention practiced by licensed healthcare professionals. During clinical hypnosis, you remain in control of your process—you cannot be made to do anything against your will or values. The focus is entirely on therapeutic outcomes such as pain reduction, anxiety management, behavior change, or addressing specific health conditions.

  • Clinical hypnosis can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions including:

    • Anxiety and depression

    • Trauma and phobias

    • Insomnia and sleep disorders

    • Chronic pain from various sources

    • Digestive conditions including irritable bowel syndrome

    • Cardiovascular conditions

    • Various forms of addiction

    • Challenges with lifestyle and behavior changes

Even when hypnosis cannot treat a condition directly, it can often support other aspects of treatment by addressing stress, improving sleep, or enhancing treatment adherence. During your consultation, we can discuss whether hypnotherapy might be helpful for your specific health concerns.

  • A typical session begins with a discussion of your goals and concerns. I'll then guide you into a relaxed, focused state of awareness (trance) through various techniques. In this receptive state, we'll work with therapeutic suggestions specifically tailored to your health goals. You'll remain aware throughout the session and can communicate if needed. Many patients describe the experience as deeply relaxing—similar to being absorbed in a good book or movie. Sessions usually last 60-90 minutes, and the number of sessions needed varies depending on your specific concerns and goals.

  • No. Clinical hypnosis is a collaborative process in which you remain in control. You cannot be compelled to do or say anything against your will or values. You'll be aware of what's happening throughout the session and will remember the experience afterward. Hypnosis doesn't give the practitioner any special access to your thoughts—you choose what to share, just as in any other medical appointment.

  • Ayurveda has a sophisticated understanding of the mind (buddhi) and its functions, including our understanding of the world (dhi), our emotional resilience (dhrti), and our memory (smrti). Clinical hypnosis complements Ayurvedic medicine by directly addressing these mental faculties. From an Ayurvedic perspective, hypnotherapy helps heal buddhi and balance its functions. Additionally, hypnosis is an excellent tool for supporting the lifestyle and behavioral changes that are central to Ayurvedic care. At our practice, we integrate hypnotherapy with traditional Ayurvedic approaches for a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses both physical and psychological aspects of health.

  • The number of sessions varies depending on your specific condition and goals. Some patients experience significant improvement after just 1-2 sessions, while others with complex or long-standing issues may benefit from a series of sessions over several months. During your initial consultation, we'll discuss a recommended treatment plan based on your individual needs. Many patients report feeling more relaxed and centered immediately after their first session, with therapeutic benefits building over subsequent sessions.

  • As a licensed medical doctor, I've completed specialized training in clinical hypnosis through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH), which only admits licensed healthcare professionals for hypnosis education. I began practicing clinical hypnosis in 2019 and have continued my studies and practice since then. Clinical hypnosis is a psychological procedure with significant implications for health, which is why it's essential to work with a properly trained and licensed professional. All of my hypnotherapy work is conducted within the scope of my medical practice and in accordance with professional standards and ethics.

  • The best way to determine if clinical hypnosis might benefit you is to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation. During this conversation, we can discuss your health concerns, answer any questions you might have about hypnotherapy, and assess whether this approach would be appropriate for your specific situation. If you're already a patient at our practice, you can also bring up your interest in hypnotherapy during your next appointment. Remember that at our practice, hypnotherapy is typically integrated with other therapeutic approaches as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. - Schedule Now

  • Your initial assessment is the foundation of your personalized treatment. During this session, we'll get to know you comprehensively - your care goals, medical history, Ayurvedic constitution, values, aspirations, fears, and how you learn and understand the world. This thorough understanding allows us to tailor every aspect of your hypnotherapy experience, from the approaches and wording used to the timing of therapeutic suggestions. We believe there's no substitute for truly knowing the person we're working with.

  • Every appointment is structured and tailored specifically to you and your needs on that particular day. We'll gather any necessary history through thoughtful questioning, and if you're seeing us in-person, we may include pulse readings as needed. Some days may call for a formal hypnotic process with structured induction, trance deepening, and clear therapeutic suggestions. On other days you might benefit from a more conversational approach where therapeutic work blends naturally into our discussion. Regardless of the approach, every session includes thorough re-alerting and an opportunity for you to ask questions.

  • The treatment environment significantly impacts your ability to relax and enter therapeutic trance. We carefully control sensory factors like lighting, ambient sound, and temperature in our office space. For telehealth sessions, we'll provide guidance on optimizing your environment. It's important to choose a space where you feel comfortable and relaxed, away from distractions like traffic noise or rooms with negative emotional associations.

  • Yes, you may receive assignments for self-practice as we wrap up sessions. As you progress from visit to visit, you'll develop greater proficiency and command over your own trance and hypnotic process, which many patients find very empowering.

  • Hypnotherapy integrates seamlessly with existing treatment plans, whether with us at The Buddha's Medicine or with other healthcare providers. We coordinate and communicate with other providers as needed and document your progress and key insights from every visit. Our goal is to ensure your treatment and care are as unified and cohesive as possible. There are no negative interactions with other therapies - only complementary effects and benefits.

  • Absolutely. Your treatment may integrate other elements of Ayurvedic and lifestyle medicine, as well as meditation, pranayama, or other practices based on your constitutional factors and your needs. In the hands of a qualified health professional, hypnotherapy is a safe modality that complements many other therapeutic approaches.

  • We document and track your progress and key insights from every single visit. This allows us to ensure continuity of care and measure your development over time, including your growing proficiency with trance and hypnotic processes.

"Before I was introduced to Dr. Matt, I was seeing different specialists every month without getting any results. I felt like I had to heal myself and that left me in limbo. With Matt I feel like I deserve to be well. He is a fantastic listener and master at solving puzzles. I’m amazed at his attention to detail and amount of time he takes to listen to my laundry list of symptoms. With his guidance, I’m grateful to be the best version of myself I’ve ever been."
