Your Skin Is Telling a Story — We're Here to Listen to the Whole Thing
Eczema that flares without warning. Psoriasis that never fully clears. Severe adolescent acne, or acne that develops in adulthood. Rosacea that worsens despite everything you've tried. If you've been living with a chronic skin condition, you've likely been treated from the outside in — topical steroids, creams, antibiotics, perhaps even immunosuppressants — with varying degrees of relief, but rarely a lasting resolution.
That's because skin conditions are rarely just skin conditions.
At The Buddha's Medicine, we care for you from the inside out.
How We Approach skin health
Ayurveda regards the skin as a mirror of internal health. Skin conditions are understood not as surface-level problems requiring surface-level solutions, but as visible expressions of deeper imbalances — in digestion, detoxification pathways, blood health, liver function, hormonal balance, and emotional well-being. The skin is, quite literally, telling you something about what's happening inside.
Dr. Matt Van Auken, MD, MPH brings his Ayurvedic insights together with his training in modern integrative and lifestyle medicine to address skin conditions at their source:
Tracing the roots beneath the surface. Dr. Matt's comprehensive assessment goes well beyond the skin itself. He examines your digestive health and its influence on inflammation and metabolic toxin clearance, dietary patterns that may be contributing to reactivity, hormonal factors, stress and nervous system regulation, constitutional tendencies that predispose your skin to certain types of imbalance, and the accumulated effects of medications and topical treatments over time.
Working with your dermatology team — not against them. Many of our skin health patients are already receiving dermatological care. Dr. Matt doesn't replace that relationship; he compliments and enhances it. By addressing the internal drivers that dermatology alone cannot, our patients frequently find that their existing treatments become more effective, or that their need for aggressive interventions and topical pharmaceuticals decreases over time. As one patient shared, Dr. Matt actively works alongside their dermatologist to guide and verify treatment decisions.
Ayurvedic and integrative interventions for skin healing. Treatment plans are individualized and may include: targeted dietary modifications, herbal medicine using Ayurvedic principles, medication and supplement review, detoxification and digestive optimization to improve the body's ability to clear accumulated metabolic toxins (ama), lifestyle care — addressing sleep, stress, seasonal exposure, and daily routine — that works, Ayurvedic self-care practices to improve skin health naturally, and more.
Addressing the emotional weight of skin conditions. Chronic skin conditions often bring with them a psychological burden that can go under-acknowledged. Skin issues may affect self-image, confidence, focus and attention, social comfort, and daily quality of life. For patients who are navigating this emotional dimension of their skin issues, Jamie Van Auken offers therapy that honors the full experience of living in a body that feels unpredictable or out of your control.

"I've been working with Dr. Matt Van Auken for a few months and he is intuitive, smart and a great listener. He was able to diagnose me right away. All the other doctors seem to have no clue. My first consultation was hours getting to understand me and my husband, building a bond of sacredness. He helped with my diet and provided me with my specific holistic medicine. Dr. Matt Van Auken is now working with my dermatologist to help guide and verify my other prescription(s) provided by my dermatologist."
Chronic skin conditions deserve more than surface-level care. If you're ready for a more thorough, root-cause approach, we invite you to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation with Dr. Matt — available in-person in Portland, Oregon and via telehealth across multiple states.
