Beyond Antihistamines and Steroids — A More Complete Approach to Sinus & Respiratory Health
If you've spent years managing chronic sinus issues, seasonal allergies, recurring infections, or asthma with medications that offer temporary relief but never resolve the underlying problem, you're not alone. Many of our patients come to us after exhausting the conventional playbook — antihistamines, nasal steroids, rounds of antibiotics, even sinus surgery — still searching for lasting improvement.
At The Buddha's Medicine, we ask a different set of questions. Not just what is happening in your sinuses and respiratory system, but why it keeps happening.
How We Approach sinus & respiratory health
Ayurveda has a particularly rich tradition of treating respiratory conditions wholesomely. The sinuses, nasal passages, and lungs are deeply connected to the function of kapha dosha — the physiology governing moisture, structure, stability, and defense in the body. When kapha accumulates or becomes imbalanced, the result is often exactly what so many patients experience: congestion, chronic inflammation, mucus buildup, and a respiratory system that feels perpetually burdened.
Dr. Matt Van Auken, MD, MPH blends his Ayurvedic insights together with his training in modern integrative and lifestyle medicine to address sinus and respiratory conditions from multiple angles:
Looking beyond the obvious triggers. Environmental, pet, dust, and seasonal allergies are real, but they're rarely the whole story. Dr. Matt's comprehensive assessment method considers dietary contributions to inflammation and congestion, digestive function and its influence on immune health, constitutional tendencies that predispose certain individuals to respiratory issues, lifestyle and seasonal patterns, the role of stress and nervous system regulation, and more.
Traditional Ayurvedic respiratory therapies. Ayurveda offers a wealth of systemic targeted therapies for the sinuses and respiratory system, including nasya (nasal administration of therapeutic oils), specific pranayama (breathwork practices), dietary modifications, herbal medicines, and so much more — with centuries of traditional use and modern evidence behind them for respiratory care. These are not generic wellness recommendations; they are precise, individualized interventions based on your constitution and current state of imbalance.
Reducing reliance on medications where possible. Many of our patients want to move beyond the cycle of steroids and antihistamines. Dr. Matt works with you to build a plan that supports your respiratory health through root-cause treatment, with the goal of safely and gradually reducing your dependence on symptom-management medications over time.
Seasonal awareness and prevention. One of the most powerful aspects of Ayurvedic care is its emphasis on seasonal living. The Ayurvedic six-season model (ritu vijnana) holds that different times of year place different demands on the body — and that many respiratory flare-ups can be anticipated and mitigated through seasonal adjustments to diet, routine, and self-care practices. This preventive approach is central to how we care for our respiratory patients.

"I had bad asthma attacks that were only treated with steroids, which only made me feel worse so I needed a different way to breathe easier. Dr. Matt set up a comprehensive treatment plan with easy to follow directions, and within a few weeks I was already feeling much better. It's a much different approach — optimizing my nutrition and exercise as opposed to just taking medications — but all of a sudden my allergies that were so bad dissipated."
Chronic sinus and respiratory issues don't have to be something you simply manage forever.
